10. What skills can make me stand out other than a foreign language?
In order to find some answers for all this question I looked for a book that could cover some aspects about building your career during college time. I selected the book named 10 Things employers want you to learn in college. However the book does not have many answers according to my questions, the answers that I could find were:
6. Studying German will be helpful to build my resume, to my skills as a professional?
The book emphasize that learn a foreign language is essential according to the world you expect to work, a globalized world. It also states that German is one of the major languages in the world that would be useful to learn. At the same time states that to learn the language is valuable to study abroad in the country, this experience would add to your language skill but also for your life.
8. Which is the best time to do an internship?
Reading the book I could see that internship is never too much, you can do this in all the summers that you want, starting on your freshman year. In the beginning is harder but still possible if you do some effort to be different from other freshman, you can apply to every opportunity that you can find inside of your hall, neighborhood and also campus. Also be in touch with people that have experience on it, like faculty members or graduate students. I concluded that there is no right time to do it, however the best time would be when you already have builded some experience, after your sophomore year.
9. How can I do an Internship?
You should treat an internship as your first job, because they will probably be very similar. Some steps that you should do in order to look for an internship are:
-You should decide the type of work you want to do and also the place you plan to do it;
-Use contacts from your family and friends which may have some influence or can help you to locate an opportunity;
-Ask people that are ahead of you in college;
-But if none of this works what really matter is your own effort, look at website, offices, campus, career services books...
10. What skills can make me stand out other than a foreign language?
There are some others skills cited on the book other than learning a foreign language, writing skill is a very important skill. A good writer in terms of quality of your write, but also in terms of velocity that you can write and process ideas. Have good relationships skills, know how to deal with different people and how to make new relationships. Acquire software expertise, other than the basic. Have a depth knowledge in some field that is not directly related with you major field.
I found 4 answers out of 10 in one book, a good score since my questions are diversified. I guess that the questions that I could not find the answer in the book are not easy to find. And the best way to find most of them is talking with an expertise in the area, as an advisor, an employer..
The book was helpful in many other aspects even thought did not answer all my questions. I recommend this book to everybody that have questions regarding what you should do during college to be better prepared for your future job.
