Week #2, Free Post: Great Place to Work in Brazil and USA

If you read my 'About Me' page you may already know that I am from Brazil. I cam to study in the US but I do not discard the possibility of going back to work there, actually this is on my plans now. Even being a freshman I am already very worried about my future and I search a lot about internships, trainees programs.. In my researches I have found the Great Place to Work website, the institute make research all over the world to create, study, and recognize great workplaces. I have done a research about Brazilians great places to work and also Americans, and here is the result:
BRAZIL:                                                  USA:
1. Google                                                  1. Google

2. Caterpillar Brasil                               2. SAS
3. Kimberly-Clark Brasil                      3. The Boston Consulting Group
4. Laboratório Sabin                             4. Edward Jones
5. GAZIN                                                 5. Quicken Loans
6. Magazine Luiza                                 6. Genentech
7. SAS Brasil                                           7. salesforce.com
8. TICKET                                               8. Intuit
9. JW Marriot                                         9. Robert W. Baird & Co.
10. Accor Brasil                                      10. DPR Construction
11. Volvo                                                  11. Camden Property Trust
12. Microsoft                                          12. Wegmans Food Markets
13. LOSANGO                                        13. David Weekley Homes
14. Boehringer Ingelheim                    14. Burns & McDonnell
15. Duke Energy                                     15. Hilcorp
16. Chemtech                                          16. CHG Healthcare Services
17. Coca-Cola Recofarma                     17. USAA
18. Embraer                                            18. Southern Ohio Medical Center
19. Elektro Eletricidade e Serviços    19. Baptist Health
20. Novozymes                                       20. Ultimate Software

There are some companies in common, for example Google and SAS and both of them are in good position for both places. In Brazil we can see the popular names as Coca Cola, Microsoft, Volvo.. However in the US the companies are not famous at all, this is good because this way we take off that image that good companies are the famous ones. This research will help a lot when I look for internships and also a job.

Week #2, Prompted Post: Comparing a blog and an article

Today I am going to analyze two different kinds of publication, one is a marketing blog and the other is an article from a well known marketing magazine.

The first one is Amy Porterfield blog's and the second is the article from Didem Kurt John Hulland, Aggressive Marketing Strategy Following Equity Offerings and Firm Value: The Role of Relative Strategic Flexibility.

The analysis is based up on the differences they have in style, arrangement, purpose and audience.

Amy's blog is a very nice blog if you like the marketing related to social media, she publishes many interesting things about this field. Her audience is very broad, from people that are really interested marketing and business to people that just want to get some tips about relating social medias with their own marketing. However the article has a more focused audience, it will be mainly the reader from Journal of Marketing and some academics members. This difference in audience totally reflects all the other differences.

The blog has a more loose style that attract most of people in the internet, is easy to read has many paragraphs, sometimes bullets. The article follows a format to be published on the magazine, it follow a rule of thought as well and also use a much more formal vocabulary.

The way they get to their audience is also different, the magazine is printed and virtual, but the blog is only virtual. The article should thing about all the ways that it can reach their reader and the blog is totally focused on the internet.

Like most kinds of publications, the subject does not make them the same. All the types of writing consider different variables when they are being produced, just as I am doing right now with this post. I consider many factors when I chose how to separate the paragraphs,, how to use this certain word and also how to refer to things.

Week #1, Free Post: A marketing expert, Philip Kotler.

I decided very early in High School what I was going to study during college. I knew that I wanted to study business, but something called even more my attention, understand all the marketing strategy that surround us every day, every where and every time, since that time I started to read and talk with people that worked or studied in the area of marketing, and they always came to me with a name, Philip Kotler.

I started to get tired of hearing his name and do not know who they were talking about, than I decided to search for Kotler as much as I could, and now I feel that I know a lot of things about this marketing expert and am able to share his name with people too.

An interesting fact about Kotler is that he did his college, Master's and Phd in the economics field. Week #1, Prompted Post: 10 question and how to find the answer

When I think about the business field I get a little bit scared about the wilderness of it, is so huge and competitive. This way I find myself with a lot of questions and insecurities, here I listed 10 questions that stand out in my daily life:

1. Be an employee or start my own job?
2. Which field inside of marketing is the best for me: the creative or the managerial?
3. How much the reputation of the school that I have studied meters, when getting a job?
4. People who study abroad come back to work or they stay abroad?
5. International Business Minor, what will I use it for?
6. Studying German will be helpful to build my resume, to my skills as a professional?
7. The GPA is really important to get a job?
8. Which is the best time to do an internship?
9. How can I do an Internship?
10. What skills can make me stand out other than a foreign language?

In order to find some answers for all this question I looked for a book that could cover some aspects about building your career during college time. I selected the book named 10 Things employers want you to learn in college. However the book does not have many answers according to my questions, the answers that I could find were:

6. Studying German will be helpful to build my resume, to my skills as a professional?
The book emphasize that learn a foreign language is essential according to the world you expect to work, a globalized world. It also states that German is one of the major languages in the world that would be useful to learn. At the same time states that to learn the language is valuable to study abroad in the country, this experience would add to your language skill but also for your life.

8. Which is the best time to do an internship?
Reading the book I could see that internship is never too much, you can do this in all the summers that you want, starting on your freshman year. In the beginning is harder but still possible if you do some effort to be different from other freshman, you can apply to every opportunity that you can find inside of your hall, neighborhood and also campus. Also be in touch with people that have experience on it, like faculty members or graduate students. I concluded that there is no right time to do it, however the best time would be when you already have builded some experience, after your sophomore year.

9. How can I do an Internship?
You should treat an internship as your first job, because they will probably be very similar. Some steps that you should do in order to look for an internship are:
-You should decide the type of work you want to do and also the place you plan to do it;
-Use contacts from your family and friends which may have some influence or can help you to locate an opportunity;
-Ask people that are ahead of you in college;
-But if none of this works what really matter is your own effort, look at website, offices, campus, career services books...

10. What skills can make me stand out other than a foreign language?
There are some others skills cited on the book other than learning a foreign language, writing skill is a very important skill. A good writer in terms of quality of your write, but also in terms of velocity that you can write and process ideas. Have good relationships skills, know how to deal with different people and how to make new relationships. Acquire software expertise, other than the basic. Have a depth knowledge in some field that is not directly related with you major field.

I found 4 answers out of 10 in one book, a good score since my questions are diversified. I guess that the questions that I could not find the answer in the book are not easy to find. And the best way to find most of them is talking with an expertise in the area, as an advisor, an employer..

The book was helpful in many other aspects even thought did not answer all my questions. I recommend this book to everybody that have questions regarding what you should do during college to be better prepared for your future job.
