Week #3, Prompted Post: Interview with Michael VanPutten

I interviewed a professional on my field, marketing, and asked him some interesting questions regarding his daily routine, his job, things that he writes everyday...
My interviewee was Michael VanPutten, he is the Senior Marketing Communications Manager for Web and New Media of MSU. The interview happened in a meeting in his office at Olds Hall.

1. What is your daily routine of job?
Usually in the start of the week I take the first 15 minutes to look at different goals that are coming up and plan how to allocate time to do that. But a regular day can involve meeting with clients on campus, and also develop projects that are going on.

2. What made you interested in this field?
Ever since I was really young I liked the design aspect of things, of having a problem and trying to solve it in a way that requested creativity or bringing different types of things together.People can come to this profession because they like the writing or the creative part, I am I kind of odd person because I came from the technical stand point. I learned how to quote pages initially and than I learned how to do design work and learned more about communications and I had a lot of opportunities that I could get into the strategic side of how do you put all this resources together

3.How many hours you work each week?

It can be anywhere between 40 and 60 hours per week, depends from week to week. Is not unusual to stay over time, sometimes is unintentional, I just get into the flow of what I am doing and lose track of time. The latest that I have stayed here was 11 o clock, that was a time when we were redesigning the institutional web page and were going to launch it, and there was a lot of details to look before we publish everything.

4. Do you enjoy your job?
I do. Part of what I really enjoy is the people here, I work with very talented people and I regularly learn new things from them, new perspectives about how to approach things and I find that to be very rewarding and that makes me feel more complete as a human being.

5. How much writing do you do in your job?
Most of my writing are technical. But we have to do a little bit of everything. Being a writer is not my best suit, I do ok. Most of the things that I have written are intended to be to the internal audience. And lots of lots of emails, sometimes is just answering a quick question, but lots of time is trying to explain something related to measurements and analytics. But the basic thing is to know who are you writing for in emails, and know how to refer to them.

6. How do you communicate with your staff and boss?
We have to be aware about what their personal preferences are, and deal with how I am going to interact with them. Can be pick up the phone and explain, or come over and grab a cup of coffee, sometimes is very quick to be objective. It depends the situation and the person.

These were the questions and answers for Michael VanPutter. This was a very nice experience, he was very accessible and kind. What he transmitted me is that he really likes his job, and what he likes more is that this is not a static job, you must be flexible because each situation is different and you learn different thing from them. We also talked about the creative and the strategic side of marketing and that I still have some doubts about it, even liking more the strategic. And he tolde me to wait, I have a plenty of time to decide about it, and that before I should experience both fields inside of marketing.
